Performances by Two Masterful Theatrical Storytellers

Edmonton, AB - The University of Alberta Department of Drama will bring together two award-winning master storytellers, Chunga Otiende and Tololwa Mollel, for a theatrical story performance followed by an interactive audience session on the methodology of contemporary storytelling. The event will be held at 7:30pm on September 19 at the Timms Centre for
the Arts.


In this energetic and engaging session, these two internationally acclaimed storytellers will excite audiences with their dynamic style of performance. Participants will have the rare opportunity to interact with some of the best storytellers in East Africa, learning how stories illuminate and support communities. Otiende and Mollel will share valuable lessons on effective storytelling, how to create social change through storytelling, and their experiences with story creation, sources and performance.


A distinguished visitor of the University of Alberta, Chunga Otiende will be in residence September 18-30, 2017, offering workshops to students and performing artists. He is part of an interdisciplinary and international research and artist team hosted by the U of A called Old Stories in New Ways, focused on tapping the powers of story and performance to contribute to community social intervention.

About Chunga Otiende


Kenyan born Chunga Otiende's award-winning story performances have been seen across western Kenya and beyond, sometimes delivered in up to three languages and including music, dance and story. In addition to offering entertainment and connection to culture, his performances have had significant social impact in communities, including awareness of healthcare issues, government corruption and youth education.


About Tololwa Mollel


Originally from Tanzania, Tololwa Mollel is a University of Alberta alumni, playwright and author with over 17 internationally published children's books including the award-winning The Orphan Boy, My Rows and Piles of Coins and Big Boy. His short stories for adults have been translated into 10 languages including Korean, Serbian, Norwegian, Spanish and several South African tongues. Mollel has performed across Alberta, as well as nationally and internationally.
