The University of Alberta welcomes Dr. Luk Van Den Dries of the University of Antwerp as our Distinguished Visitor for the entire week March 4 through 9th, 2013. He will be giving lectures and seminars in Drama, MLCS, and Augustana.
Luk Van Den Dries is a scholar, theatre critic, director, dramaturg, and theatre advocate. He is the authority on the theatre artist Jan Fabre - one of the leading artists in the contemporary European art-scene, and will address Fabre's work in a series of interventions here at the University of Alberta. He will also talk about his own practice as a director and dramaturg.
Jan Fabre is a visual artist, poet, sculptor, choreographer, installation artist, director, and artist-entrepreneur, or multidisciplinary artist-extra-ordinaire, he does not eschew controversy in his stunning creations, whether in sculpture, on canvas, in architecture, in poetry, film, or on the stage. His live productions now regularly open in New York, and tour the world, including Canada (Ottawa and Montreal). Most recently The Power of Theatrical Madness, is a re-creation of his seminal 1984 production, which catapulted him on the international stage. It is a highly ritualistic Gesammtkunstwerk, which engages the spectator with ground-breaking events of modernist art history.
