Call for Applicants: Lee Playwright in Residence

The Drama Department at the University of Alberta is looking for an experienced playwright who wishes to have 12 months of creation time combined with providing dramaturgical support to Edmonton’s playwriting community. We are seeking a playwright with a proven track record of professional productions who can help guide playwrights of all levels through their own creative processes.

1. Open to any playwright with Canadian citizenship or permanent residency.
2. $60,000 plus benefits for one year (July to June).
   1. This is not a teaching position.
   2. Playwright will receive office space on the North Campus of the University of Alberta.
3. Additional funding/support will be provided for workshop expenses, depending on the playwright's need. (Amount of support will vary by year.)
4. The residency will be 50% service to the University of Alberta and the Edmonton area playwriting community, and 50% for the playwright to work on their project(s).
5. There is a built-in expectation that the playwright will actively engage with the Drama Department students and faculty. There are many opportunities to work with students on their new works or with others in the unit. We anticipate that the Lee Playwright in Residence will actively participate in the students’ New Works Festival which might include dramaturgical support.
6. The resident playwright must serve on the jury for the Lee Playwriting prize for new Canadian plays.
7. For any work created during this residency the playwright will acknowledge the University of Alberta Department of Drama and the Lee Playwright in Residence.
8. The offer also includes travel to and from Edmonton and the playwright’s home (within Canada). One return airfare.
9. Accommodation in Edmonton during the residency is the Playwright’s responsibility.

Interested playwrights should apply with:

1. Curriculum vitae.
2. A letter of intent (1000 words maximum) articulating interest in the two key elements of the residency (new play development and outreach) and the project(s) that you would be working on while in residence. Please include your goals for the residency and how you will use the residency to achieve said goals. The letter of intent should outline their interest in new play development and outreach, including a bit about what community you see yourself working with, for example, a playwright might choose to work with seniors or the LGBTQ2S community. PDF is preferred for documents but docx or doc formats will also be accepted.
3. Names of 3 references with contact information.

Decisions of the selection committee are final.

Depending on the number of applications, a decision will be made by May 10, 2024 at the latest.
