Do you need more help than what we provide in our group workshops? Access individual sessions from a professional Learning or Communication Specialist to maximize your academic skills and outcomes. We offer both in-person and remote individual appointments.
Learning Strategies Appointments
Learning Strategies appointments with a professional learning specialist cover academic strategies in a supportive environment to help students on their academic journey. Academic strategies allow students to work from their strengths to improve their learning skills.
In these 50-minute appointments, you and the Learning Specialist can collaborate on topics such as:
- time management
- reading strategies for textbooks, articles, and other texts
- note-taking
- test-taking
- study skills
- task analysis
- critical thinking
How to Prepare for a Learning Strategies Appointment
You may bring with you:
- course syllabi
- notes
- textbooks
- assignments
You are also welcome just to bring yourself and/or your questions.
Communication Appointments
Communication appointments may cover topics within academic settings, such as developing strategies for in-class discussions, group work, self-advocacy, oral exams, presentation skills, preparing for and participating in clinicals, practicums, and work co‑ops.
How to Prepare for a Communication Appointment
- Bring any materials/information relating to the communication tasks within the specific course, assignment, or setting.
- Reflect on your own strengths and needs around communicating.
- You can bring some questions if you wish to discuss questions from an ASC communication workshop.
*NOTE: These appointments are with a communication specialist and not a counsellor and do not cover counselling content.*

- Select Academic Success Centre (ASC) from the drop-down menu on the left
- Select ASC Appointments
- Select your desired appointment type and follow the prompts to complete your booking
We encourage you to schedule appointments at least one or two weeks in advance, as Learning Specialists can be in high demand.
We do not limit how many appointments students can access each semester; however, we would like to ask you to please keep your booked appointments.

- U of A Student Fee: Free
- Non–U of A Fee: $22.50 per session

Presented by our Learning Specialists, each workshop focuses on specific academic tasks and concerns with university-level studying and reading, time management and planning, exams or test-taking strategies.
