For over 20 years, the International Institute of Business Analysis™ (IIBA®) has helped shape the practice of business analysis to achieve better enterprise outcomes. Entry Certificate in Business Analysis (ECBA™)
The IIBA offers several designations to validate the expertise and experience of business analysts at different levels. IIBA certification has specific prerequisites, including work experience, education, and understanding of business analysis concepts. The University of Alberta offers courses and programs that can help you meet the education components of three designations from IIBA- The Certified Business Analysis Professional™ (CBAP ®), Certification of Capability in Business Analysis™ (CCBA®), and Entry Certificate in Business Analysis™ (ECBA™).
The Certified Business Analysis Professional™ (CBAP ®) designation is a professional certification for individuals with extensive business analysis (BA) experience. CBAP® recipients are the leading senior members of the BA community.
If you are a business analysis practitioner with 2 to 3 years’ experience, earning your Certification of Capability in Business Analysis™ (CCBA®) recognizes your ability to take on larger and/or more complex project responsibilities.
The Entry Certificate in Business Analysis™ (ECBA™) covers foundational knowledge on approaching business analysis according to the BABOK® Guide.
Important notes
- Students must be members of the IIBA to receive any of the above certificates.
- Each level of certification has its own requirements and exams - explore your options on the IIBA website.
- Senior designations require a certain amount of PD hours:
- Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP®) - 35 professional development hours (within the last 4 years).
- Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (CCBA®) - 21 professional development hours (within the last 7 years).

U of A Relevant Courses
Students can apply the hours from some Business Analysis courses towards IIBA certifications. The following three courses are IIBA endorsed training for the ECBA™ and can be applied towards professional development hours for the CBAP® and CCBA®.
