Society of Local Government Managers

The Society of Local Government Managers regulates the practices of local government managers and ensures its members act in the best public interest. Under Alberta Statute, the Society sets practice standards along with remedial actions. As well, the Society recognizes professional managers with a Certified Local Government Managers (CLGM) designation.
Certified Local Government Managers (CLGM)
The Certified Local Government Managers (CLGM) designation signifies a public manager who has already received a high level of academic and professional achievement and has a commitment to ongoing education. As well, the CLGM designation recognizes a manager, of good character and reputation, who practices the standards governed by the Society.
Important notes
- Completion of both NACLAA programs (Level I and Level II) fulfills the educational requirements for the Certified Local Government Manager (CLGM) designation in Alberta.
- Successful completion of NACLAA Level I is required for admission to the NACLAA Level II program.
- The NACLAA Level I certificate has 10 possible electives. However, only 6 of those 10 qualify for the CLGM designation.
- Students who hold the Certificate in Manitoba Municipal Administration (CMMA) or the University of Regina’s Certificate in Local Government Authority (CLGA) may receive transfer credits toward the NACLAA Level I certificate.
- CLGM designation has additional non-education requirements:
- have at least five years experience in local government management in Canada
- believe in and practice the Society's Code of Ethics, and
- are members of the Society of Local Government Managers.
- Designation information in this profile may change without notice. Please contact the regulatory organization or visit the organization’s website for the latest updates before making any career decisions.
