Get to know...Anna Martyniak
This month, we're excited to highlight Anna Martyniak, Administrator Coordinator at the Alberta School of Business. We learn about her favourite comfort food, top travel destination and her best advice for new colleagues!
What’s a fun fact about you that most people wouldn’t know?
Most people wouldn’t guess it, but I have a crazy amount of energy. I’m always on the move, knocking out to-do lists, jumping into new projects, and keeping up with a packed schedule. I just love staying busy and tackling challenges. Some people call it high energy. I just call it being me.
What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend or day off?
My favorite way to spend my energy is with my family, especially my husband and son. Whether we’re out camping in the woods, exploring new hiking trails, going on long walks, or just hanging out at home enjoying each other’s company, that’s where I’m truly happy. Time with them is the best way to recharge my spirit, and it makes everything else feel worthwhile.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
There are so many places I want to visit, making it hard to choose just one. Every country has something unique to offer. However, Croatia is high on my bucket list. The capital city, Zagreb, is rich in history, culture, and beauty. Some must-visit spots include Plitvice Lakes, the stunning Golden Horn Beach, and Diocletian’s Palace.
What’s a hobby or skill you’ve recently picked up (or would like to try)?
I’ve gotten into overnight kayaking trips, and it’s been an amazing experience. My husband, sister, and I took on Maligne Lake, spending two nights in a tent surrounded by breathtaking scenery and its stunning blue waters. Even though it was June, the lake was still covered in snow and ice, making it an unforgettable adventure and one that made me fall in love with kayaking even more.
Do you have a favorite meal or go-to comfort food?
My ultimate go-to food has to be sushi, especially pressed salmon sushi. And when it comes to sweets, nothing beats Marabou Daim Original Swedish Milk Chocolate Pralines from IKEA. They're absolutely addictive and a must-have for any chocolate lover!
If you could have dinner with any historical or famous figure, who would it be and why?
If I could, I would love to have dinner with Albert Einstein. I would ask him if he ever imagined he would become one of the greatest scientists in history. I would also ask if he ever thought his quotes would become such important and educational words that some people live by today.
"If you can't explain it to a six-year-old, you don't understand it yourself."
What inspires or motivates you the most in your day-to-day life?
My son is my greatest source of inspiration and motivation every day. He drives me to be my best, keeps me moving forward, and reminds me of what truly matters. His laughter fills my heart with joy, his curiosity inspires me to keep learning, and his love gives me strength, even on the toughest days. Everything I do is for him—to create a better future, to show him the value of hard work and kindness, and to be the role model he deserves.
Can you share a bit about your role and what brought you to the Alberta School of Business?
I am the Business Academic Department Coordinator for the departments of Accounting, Business Analytics (ABA), and Finance (FIN). As an ADC, I provide specialized administrative support in the operations of academic programs, including HR, recruitment, financials, research account support, evaluations for FEC/ATSEC, communication, and events. I was attracted to the Alberta School of Business due to its strong academic reputation and its dynamic approach to business education.
What’s been your most memorable moment at the Alberta School of Business so far?
The people working in the school. Their passion, dedication, and enthusiasm create a dynamic environment where there's always something new to experience. Their energy makes work not just fulfilling but also exciting and fun, turning even the busiest days into memorable moments.
What’s one piece of advice you’d share with a new colleague joining the school?
Build relationships across departments. The School of Business is a collaborative environment, and connecting with faculty, staff, and students will help you navigate your role more effectively and make your experience more rewarding. Don’t hesitate to introduce yourself, ask questions, and seek guidance—people here are always happy to help and support one another.
