The passing of Alumnus and long time department volunteer Peter Kirchmeir
M. Whitecotton-Carroll - 3 April 2023
Peter F Kirchmeir first came to Anthropology in 2000 after retiring from teaching school. While pursuing a BA in Anthropology, he began volunteering with the Archaeology Collections on February 1st 2001 when he signed up to assist with our Science Sunday outreach event. Peter became an integral part of this and many other outreach programs in the 2 decades he spent with the department. At the time of this initial event, Peter expressed a keen interest in becoming more involved with the Archaeology Collections, and in September of 2001 Peter took on the job of Ami Archaeology Catalogue Assistant. The Ami European lithic and associated material came to us in the 1990’s with minimal information. Doing both volunteer and contract work, Peter has done extensive cataloguing on this important collection including most of the data entry, identifying tool type, measurement, researching site names and locations, and researching collectors and intermediaries. He has also mentored numerous new volunteers on artifact identification and typologies. Peter received the Ualberta Museum’s 2006 Volunteer of the Year Award for his work in the collections.
