Congratulations to the following students who received the Anthropology department selected awards for 2010:
The Anthropology 3rd Year Scholarship - Niall Fink
The Anthropology 4th Year Scholarship - Melissa Ritz
The Luciana (Pizzi) Sivertson Scholarship - Frances Wallace
The Dr Henry T Lewis Memorial Scholarship in Anthropology - Joshua Wasyliw
The Gerald Ferro Memorial Scholarship in Anthropology - Kathryn (Katie) Waterhouse.
Josh Wasyliw was very pleased to receive the Dr. Henry Lewis award, which is awarded to a student with superior academic achievement specializing in Socio-Cultural Anthropology. He is currently working on his 4th year Honours research paper, where he is interested in uncovering local indigenous agricultural practices/techniques in Africa which have been lost or overshadowed by commercial practices. Many of these practices may not be explicitly agricultural (due to ideological reasons etc.) however like the famous Balinese example, may have important subsistence functions which could be reintegrated into local farming traditions to help boost autonomy and productivity.
Katie Waterhouse, a PhD candidate in the department of Anthropology, says her award is helping her make final preparations for her field work (she is looking into the forensic taphonomy of burnt remains). She actually bought a fair number of items for her burn and recovery kit at Canadian Tire, with members of the Edmonton police bomb squad behind her. Needless to say, she got some very strange looks.
Congratulations again to all our award winners!
