Two groups of Edmonton and area Aboriginal high school students visited Department of Anthropology laboratory facilities as part of a Faculty of Arts Aboriginal Discovery Day on March 6. Jack Ives provided a presentation on choosing anthropology as a career, while Beth Mann showed one of the Bodo Archaeological Society archaeological videos and discussed field school activities. Beth had a selection Bodo artifacts available for viewing; undergraduates Brad White, Vince Jankunis, Rory Spickett, and Braedy Chapman, along with graduate student Peter Kirchmeir, helped students try their hand at flint knapping activities. The program, coordinated by Melissa Padfield (Marketing and Recruitment Officer Faculty of Arts) and Catherine Kloczkowski (Marketing and Sponsorship Coordinator, Faculty of Arts), is intended to increase Aboriginal enrollment in Faculty of Arts programs. About 25 high school students, along with teachers and chaperones, attended the morning and afternoon sessions.
