Campus Alberta

The University of Alberta is a strong supporter of Campus Alberta. The university has a long history of collaboration with Alberta's post-secondary institutions. When the provincial government created Campus Alberta in 2002, the U of A took on an active leadership role promoting excellence, access and efficiency across Alberta's post-secondary sector. Our leadership includes not only programming and research partnerships, but also administrative collaborations. The following timelines reflect the excellence, impact and efficiency the U of A brings to Campus Alberta by highlighting some of the university's many collaborative projects and programs.

  • 2014 - Project Planning and Delivery

    Facilities and Operations' Project Planning & Delivery unit is contracted to oversee the construction of Norquest College's $191.5 million North Learning Centre. Thus enabling the University of Alberta to leverage its skills and resources within Campus Alberta.

  • 2013 - Communications Collaboration

    The U of A signs a letter of intent with MacEwan University enabling the U of A's Communications and Technology graduate program to collaborate with MacEwan's Bachelor of Communication Studies program on learning pathway initiatives, capacity-building, research and special events. More...

    The U of A is awarded seven of the 16 prestigious Campus Alberta Innovation Program (CAIP) chairs. CAIP is a collaborative initiative among Campus Alberta's four Comprehensive Academic and Research Institutions (CARIs) designed to enhance research in energy and the environment, food and nutrition, neuroscience/prions and water.   • 2013 - Emergency Preparedness Planning

    The U of A develops an emergency preparedness plan and informational video focused on what to do in the event of an active shooter at a Campus Alberta institution.

  • 2012 - Quality Council Audit

    The U of A is the site for the first joint Alberta Universities Association/Campus Alberta Quality Council process audit for internal quality assurance.

  • 2012 - Capital Project Management Leadership

    The U of A provides capital project management services to NorQuest College for its downtown campus development project. The U of A enables its Campus Alberta partner to access people with PSE-specific experience and to build capital project experience among NorQuest staff. More...

  • 2012 - Expertise in Chemical Waste Disposal

    The U of A begins collecting and disposing of hazardous chemical waste for MacEwan University. The U of A generates revenue through this arrangement while also providing MacEwan with the most cost-effective option for waste removal. More...

  • 2012 - Best Practices in Risk Management

    The U of A establishes the Campus Alberta Risk and Assurance Committee (CARA) to facilitate the development and sharing of risk management resources and best practices among its Campus Alberta partners. The university shares its emergency risk management and crisis management team frameworks and its incident command e-learning systems.

  • 2011 - CAIP Chairs

    The Campus Alberta Innovation Program Chairs is launched. A collaborative initiative among Campus Alberta's four Comprehensive Academic and Research Institutions (CARIs)-the University of Alberta, Athabasca University, the University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge-the program is designed to recruit new research leaders to Alberta in four strategic priority areas: energy and environment, food and nutrition, neuroscience/prions and water.   • 2011 - Mutual Aid

    The U of A initiates and stewards a mutual aid agreement between Edmonton's Campus Alberta institutions, ensuring members can call upon each other for aid in times of emergency.

  • 2011 - Innovative Health Services

    The Teaching and Research Continuing Care Centre (TRCCC) is an ongoing collaboration between the University of Alberta and NorQuest College, as well as Capital Care and Alberta Health Services. TRCCC promotes teaching and research in a progressive and innovative health delivery environment.

  • 2010 - Innovative Waste Management

    The U of A's Daryl McCartney is seconded to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre of Excellence (EWMCE) as its executive director. EWMCE is a partnership between the U of A, NAIT, the City of Edmonton, Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures and AMEC, a private partner, creating an environment in which researchers and practitioners work together to pursue innovative ways of extracting value from waste.

  • 2010 - Climate Dialogue

    The U of A leads the Alberta Climate Dialogue (ABCD), which brings together multiple Campus Alberta, municipal, provincial, industry and community partners to study and test methods of public engagement on climate change. ABCD aims to determine how to spark innovations in public policy and governance, and cross-sector understanding and consensus.

  • 2009 - Campus Alberta Neuroscience

    More than 250 researchers from the universities of Alberta, Calgary and Lethbridge collaborate to create the Campus Alberta Neuroscience network. This network leverages the breadth and depth of Campus Alberta's neuroscience research in areas such as Alzheimer's, Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases, as well as stroke and brain-damage rehabilitation.

  • 2005 - Innovative Partnerships

    The U of A, the provincial government and IBM partner to create the IBM Alberta Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS). The centre conducts innovative systems research into areas such as health and bio-systems, service systems, and energy and the environment for the benefit of all Albertans. More...

  • 2003 - Ensuring High Quality Programming

    The U of A joins the Campus Alberta Quality Council (CAQC). An arms-length quality assurance agency, CAQC makes recommendations to the provincial government on the creation of degree programs. The university supports CAQC's mission of ensuring Alberta post-secondary institutions offer programming of the highest quality.

  • 2002 - Improving Cattle Feed

    The U of A signs a memorandum of understanding with Olds College and industry partners to collaborate on research to improve the efficiency of cattle feed. The project will improve the profit margin and competitiveness for many Canadian beef cattle producers.

  • 1999 - Gaming and Gambling Research

    The universities of Alberta, Calgary and Lethbridge launch the Alberta Gaming Research Institute to support and promote research into gaming and gambling in Alberta. The institute aims to achieve international recognition in gaming-related research. Many research projects involve teams from all three participating universities.

  • 1997 - TAL

    The U of A leads the creation of The Alberta Library (TAL). This award-winning system gives 49 Alberta libraries in more than 300 locations access to the U of A's vast library resources. Albertans in even the most remote rural communities benefit.

  • 1994 - NEOS Library Consortium

    The U of A launches the NEOS Library Consortium, an information and resource sharing project that enables 17 government, health, college and university libraries to cost-effectively share library resources, technology, collections and staff.

  • 1986 - Understanding Aging

    The Alberta Centre on Aging opens its doors. The centre advances research and education on aging through partnerships with Alberta Health Services, community groups, gerontological associations and Campus Alberta institutions, better enabling older adults to function independently.


Impact

  • 2014 - The Campus Alberta Collection

    The U of A signs a Memorandum of Understanding with the Universities of Athabasca and Calgary that will see the three institutions collaboratively publish a collection of monographs that will showcase Alberta research; explore ways to contribute to the Campus Alberta Open Educational Resources (OER) initiative; and find ways to share operational activities for better financial effectiveness. The first book in the Campus Alberta Collection is "Upgrading Oilsands Bitumen and Heavy Oil" by Murray R. Gray, published in March 2015 by the University of Alberta Press.

  • 2014 - Education Abroad

    University of Alberta International continues to successfully manage Campus Alberta education abroad programs including the Alberta Abroad initiative, an externship program launched by the Government of Alberta and the Alberta Smithsonian.

  • 2013 - Occupational Health and Safety

    More than 3,200 Albertans register for the Faculty of Extension's Occupational Health and Safety Certificate program each year. Offered collaboratively through five Campus Alberta colleges and universities, the program is a cornerstone for safety in the province. More...

  • 2013 - Access to Online Learning

    The U of A and its Campus Alberta partners launch a marketing campaign to raise awareness about online courses. Using the tag line "Let school come to you," the campaign includes print ads, transit ads, online ads, radio spots and television public service announcements. More...

  • 2013 - Outstanding Transfer Programs

    The U of A has more than 5,200 discrete course transfer agreements with its Campus Alberta partners, as well as 43 block transfer agreements.

  • 2013 - One Hour, No Power

    The U of A co-ordinates Earth Hour's One Hour, No Power challenge for 11 Campus Alberta institutions. Schools compete to see which school can collect the greatest number of pledges to power down all non-essential lights and appliances for one hour.

  • 2013 - EPL Access

    U of A and MacEwan University students can use their university ID as their Edmonton Public Library card.

  • 2013 - ATEP Success

    The Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) graduates 48 students, its largest graduating class to date. Working with Northern Lakes College, ATEP enables students to obtain a BEd degree from the U of A while staying in their community.   • 2013 - Blue Quills Partnership

    Twenty-two MEd students make history when they are the first class to graduate with a parchment from both the U of A and Blue Quills First Nations College. Of the 22 graduates, 21 are indigenous people. More...

  • 2012 - Collaborative Nursing Success

    A record-breaking 305 new students are admitted to the U of A's four-year collaborative nursing program, which allows students to earn a U of A nursing degree while studying at partner Campus Alberta institutions, including those in Red Deer, Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray. As of 2012, almost 1,500 Alberta nurses have graduated from this program.

  • 2012 - Eduroam

    The U of A joins Eduroam, a system that allows visitors from other participating institutions to securely connect to the Internet when at the U of A, and vice versa.

  • 2012 - Digital Learning

    The U of A aggressively engages in developing and expanding digital learning technologies and pedagogies. The university's leadership and expertise will lead to benefits for all of Campus Alberta. More...

  • 2010 - Improving Rural Medicine

    The U of A launches the Pre-Clinical Networked Education Medical program (PNME) in partnership with the University of Calgary, Grande Prairie Regional College and local community agencies. Under this program, select second-year undergraduate medical students spend four weeks in a rural community.

  • 2010 - Optimizing Water Use

    The U of A's Evan Davies teams up with researchers at the University of Lethbridge to improve water-use efficiency and productivity on farms and within supply and conveyance systems. The team focuses on southern Alberta, where land under irrigation has almost doubled in the last 40 years.

  • 2010 - Sharing Sustainability Expertise

    The U of A's Office of Sustainability initiates a number of programs involving other Campus Alberta institutions, including Earth Hour, the Student Sustainability Summit and the Sustainability Speaker Series. More...

  • 2010 - Alberta Rural Development Initiative

    The Alberta Rural Development Initiative (ARDN) is a not-for-profit partnership between the U of A and 20 other Campus Alberta institutions. ARDN assists in the development of rural Alberta through education, research, collaboration and networking.

  • 2009 - U of A Manages LHCADL

    The university takes on the management of the Lois Hole Campus Alberta Digital Library (LHCADL) on behalf of the provincial government. LHCADL provides 35 Campus Alberta institutions with access to commercially licensed digital resources and newly created collections of unique digitized content.

  • 2009 - Collaborative Research

    The U of A renews and expands its 2005 partnership with the IBM Alberta Centre for Advanced Studies to include researchers from the University of Calgary.

  • 2008 - Sustainability Leader

    The U of A opens its Office of Sustainability, the only Campus Alberta institution in Edmonton with a formal office dedicated to sustainability. More...

  • 2008 - Lab Educators of Alberta

    The U of A joins the Lab Educators of Alberta, an interdisciplinary community of practice for communication and collaboration between educators providing pre-licensure education for students of health-care education programs.

  • 2008 - Improving Access to Health-Care Learning

    The Interdisciplinary Health Education Partnership (IHEP) is a joint initiative between the U of A, Edmonton post-secondary institutions and Alberta Health Services. IHEP develops and assesses standardized interdisciplinary learning modules using simulation platforms. It designs and implements a series of interdisciplinary health team simulations using standardized patients, high-fidelity mannequins and virtual world technology. The partnership also creates faculty development training opportunities in designing and debriefing health team simulations.

  • 2008 - CUP joins Extension

    The Community-University Partnership joins the U of A's Faculty of Extension. Maintaining its focus on blending research with community partnerships, CUP will secure more than $20 million in research funding. More...

    The U of A's francophone faculty, Faculté Saint-Jean, changes its name to Campus Saint-Jean to better reflect its diverse programming.   • 2002 - ATEP Launched

    The U of A launches the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP). Alberta's First Nations, Métis and Inuit population is growing rapidly, creating a growing need for teachers with an understanding of Aboriginal histories and perspectives. ATEP is a BEd degree program offered in partnership with First Nations and community colleges. The program allows students to stay in their home communities as they complete their degrees. More...

  • 2000 - CUP Launched

    The Community-University Partnership is a collaboration between U of A researchers and agencies that benefit children, youth and families. One of CUP's projects, in partnership with Yellowhead Tribal Council College, is to create a better understanding of First Nations child development. More...

  • 1999 - Collaborative Education Grande Prairie

    The Faculty of Education offers a BEd (elementary route) degree at Grande Prairie Regional College. Students take their first two years enrolled in the local college's transfer program. They remain on the college campus to take the required U of A courses in their final two years, completing the entire degree program in Grande Prairie.

  • 1996 - Collaborative Education Red Deer

    The U of A partners with Red Deer College to offer a collaborative BEd degree program. Students take their first two years enrolled in the Red Deer College Bachelor of Elementary Education program, then remain on the Red Deer College campus while taking the required courses to receive a BEd from the U of A. Up to 40 Red Deer College students are accepted into this program each year. Graduates from this program can often be found teaching in or around the Red Deer area and throughout central Alberta.

  • 1991 - Maskwacis Cultural College Partnership

    Camrose Lutheran College (later the U of A's Augustana Campus) begins a partnership with Maskwacis Cultural College. Instructors from Camrose teach courses at Maskwacis Cultural College enabling students to earn a bachelor of management. A number of strong students went on to finish degrees at Augustana.

  • 1991 - Collaborative Nursing Program

    This Faculty of Nursing program enables students to study at a regional college, stay in their home community and intern at local hospitals while earning a U of A degree. The faculty builds strong regional ties, open collaboration and a standardized curriculum between the U of A and Grande Prairie Regional College, Keyano College and Red Deer College.

  • 1977 - Serving Alberta's Francophone Community

    Faculté Saint-Jean (later Campus Saint-Jean) is launched in Edmonton's French quarter. The faculty serves the growing needs of Alberta's francophone population.

  • 1974 - ACAT

    The U of A joins the Alberta Council on Admissions and Transfers (ACAT). ACAT is an independent body responsible for developing policies, guidelines and procedures facilitating transfer agreements among post-secondary institutions.

  • 2014 - Common Administrative Services

    The University of Alberta receives $10 million in funding to initiate the Campus Alberta Unified Service Project, which will provide common administrative services to manage core business needs for all subscribing institutions.

  • 2014 - Internal Audit Services

    The U of A's internal audit leads the Request for Proposal process for all CARI institutions and numerous colleges for Audit Services. Saving other institutions from having to go through a procurement process and ensuring a much improved end product for all participants.

  • 2013 - Managing Protective Services

    The U of A begins management of NAIT's security division. NAIT reached out to the U of A because of the quality of professionalism and customer service U of A protective services provides.

  • 2013 - Waste Management Partnership

    In 2013, more than 1,500 tonnes of the U of A's organic waste is converted into biogas and compost at the City of Edmonton's anaerobic digestion facility, enabling the university to divert 50 per cent of all solid waste away from landfills. More...

  • 2013 - Mobile Hazard Assessment Tool

    The U of A begins developing a hazard assessment tool for the web and mobile devices. This tool will improve the health and safety of all Campus Alberta students and staff.

  • 2013 - Sharing Procurement Expertise

    The U of A's power-generating capacity allows it to provide other Edmonton post-secondary institutions with an annual survey of utility costs so these institutions can better review their procurement strategies and engage in cost saving.

  • 2013 - Alberta Council of Post-secondary Education

    The U of A is a member of the Alberta Council of Post-secondary Education. Consisting of all presidents from Alberta's publicly funded post-secondary institutions, the council fosters collaboration and communication.

  • 2012 - One ID, Many Systems

    The U of A works with the provincial government and other Campus Alberta institutions to develop a strategy and standard for creating a system that will allow students to access learning systems, resources and services with a single ID.

  • 2012 - Policy Framework Expertise

    The U of A provides information, support and best practices with Campus Alberta partners regarding establishing policy frameworks.

  • 2012 - Sharing Best Practices

    The U of A begins sharing its laboratory safety, bio-safety and emergency preparedness e-learning classes with safety personnel at MacEwan University.

  • 2012 - Shared Faculty

    The U of A continues its long-standing practice of sharing a pharmacy faculty position with the University of Calgary's family medicine program.

  • 2011 - Improved Accounting Standards

    The U of A co-chairs the Post-Secondary Institution Standing Committee on Financial Reporting with the provincial government. The committee is developing accounting standards and reporting practices for all Campus Alberta institutions.

  • 2010 - Leading-Edge Continuing Care

    The U of A is the Campus Alberta headquarters for the Institute for Continuing Care Education and Research (ICCER). ICCER finds cross-institutional synergies, performs leading-edge research and innovation, and implements best practices among participating post-secondary institutions.

  • 2009 - Audit Efficiencies

    The U of A signs a memorandum of understanding with Campus Alberta partners to share its audit methodologies. This will maximize the efficiency of audits conducted throughout the sector and establish continuity of practice.

  • 2009 - Green Cleaning

    The U of A shares its green cleaning program methodologies with the University of Calgary. Since the implementation of this program in 2007, cleaning-related water use at the U of A has decreased 33 per cent. More...

  • 2007 - SGER Exemption

    The U of A and the Government of Alberta work together to exempt Campus Alberta district energy plants from carbon penalties under the Specified Gas Emitters Regulation, as these plants help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, thus reducing energy costs for all Campus Alberta institutions.

  • 2005 - Sharing Information and Communications Technology

    The Alberta Association in Higher Education for Information Technology is a not-for-profit through which Campus Alberta institutions can share information and communications technology knowledge, experience, management practices, resources and services.

  • 2004 - PeopleSoft Manager

    The U of A establishes uDigit Systems, an independent, not-for-profit corporation that provides and manages PeopleSoft licensing agreements with universities, colleges, government departments and other public institutions in Alberta.

  • 2013 - Collaborative Hosting

    The U of A goes live with collaborative Moodle hosting. The U of A and four other Campus Alberta institutions share Moodle, a web-based learning management system.
