"Segundo Sol" | Ludmila Lima De Morais

A minimalist scene featuring a small, pale yellow house-like structure situated in the middle of a calm body of water. The water reflects the structure and the soft, pastel sky above. Inside the structure, a seashell is visible through a square opening, adding a subtle element of intrigue to the serene setting. The overall atmosphere is peaceful and contemplative, with gentle colours and clean lines.

About the Show

Segundo Sol is an invitation to reflect on the ways technology shapes our emotional landscape and to consider the transformative potential of art in navigating this evolving terrain. In an age where advanced intelligent technologies permeate our lives, the boundaries between the natural and artificial, human and machine, blur and evolve.

The works presented in Segundo Sol delve into these intersections, exploring the profound emotional and sensory experiences shaped by our interactions with technology. Drawing inspiration from the artist’s personal journey of migration and transformation, as well as the profound changes wrought by the COVID-19 lockdown, Segundo Sol reflects on themes of confinement, memory, and connection. The exhibition features a collection of artworks that include robotic sculptures, 3D-printed objects with embedded sound modules, and interactive installations.

About the Artist

Ludmila Lima de Morais is an Edmonton-based artist whose work spans video, robotics, sculpture, game engines, sound, and interactive installations. She navigates the intersection of traditional and digital media, creating pieces that explore everyday life, affection, and non-orthodox sound compositions. Her projects often incorporate advanced technologies, such as facial recognition and robotics, to examine human-nature relationships and the impact of technology on our lives.

Ludmila was born in Brasília, Brazil, in 1996. She studied Visual Arts at the Universidade de Brasília and is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Alberta. Her notable works include 'Second Sun,' an interactive robotic sunflower that uses facial recognition to track viewers, and 'Ressonar (Resound),' a sound-based installation exploring the themes of home and migration, which won the last SSI Moses Asch competition at the University of Alberta in 2022.

Ludmila has also collaborated on 'Buddy at the Banff Park Zoo' with Daniel Evans and Lianne McTavish. This project delves into historical and contemporary perspectives on animal display and conservation.

She has exhibited her work in Brazil and Canada, and her interdisciplinary approach is informed by her diverse educational background and a commitment to integrating artistic practice with technological innovation. Ludmila continues to explore new ways to blend art and technology, reflecting her belief in the transformative power of interdisciplinary collaboration.
