Lyndal Osborne's printmaking and installation come together in a significant new traveling exhibition. "Where Rivers Meet Sea" begins its tour at The Rooms in St. John's, Newfoundland until December 2. Curator Melinda Pinfold, a University of Alberta Art and Design alumnus, has written an accompanying catalogue.

Two new permanent faculty members have been hired by the department, starting this fall term. Assistant Professor Natalie Loveless is an art historian with a contemporary focus, and Assistant Professor Jesse Thomas joins the painting staff.

FAB Gallery exhibit tells stories of the north

The work the charming 48-year-old Dundee native is doing is a complicated and fascinating matter. First approached by Dene aboriginal northerners, later hired by our federal government, he's currently Canada Research Chair in design studies at the University of Alberta. The designer/artist/architect is involved in an exercise in trust and, to some degree, healing - a long-due acceptance that modern building and architecture in the western subarctic should buck imperial tradition and finally meet the needs of its indigenous culture, instead of looking like matchboxes.

Maria Whiteman's basement studio is full of animals. There are photos of pickled pigs and deer in jars, stuffed birds perched on stands. A film of a hand caressing a taxidermy bear plays on her computer. Her two dogs, rescued from the Edmonton Humane Society, flop onto blankets and steal pencils from the drawing table.

The New Alberta Contemporaries Exhibition Features Art Work by U of A Students

The ESKER Foundation in Calgary has opened an expansive new gallery space. The inaugural exhibition, The New Alberta Contemporaries, has been described as a "snapshot of emerging contemporary art in Alberta. It's a celebration of rising talent, a gathering point for dialogue, and exchange of ideas, and interaction of the province's art institutions."

New CRC announced

The University of Alberta has been awarded a new Canada Research Chair, five renewals and one advancement worth a total of $7.1 million, the federal government announced on March 13. Among these is Art and Design professor Gavin Renwick, named as Tier 2 CRC researcher, a title that comes with a $500,000 award paid out over five years. It is given to emerging researchers who are acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field.

U of A, Art and Design Participation in Banff Research in Culture 2012

As part of the prestigious dOCUMENTA (13) exhibition taking place this year in Kassel, Germany, the Banff Centre will be hosting an art residency/workshop called The Retreat. Two members of the U of A Art and Design department have been selected to attend this event: MFA graduate student Brad Necyk (Intermedia/Drawing) and contract drawing instructor Caitlin Wells.

InSight: Visualizing Health Humanities Exhibition Call for Proposals

Health humanities is an emerging, interdisciplinary field that connects medicine, the arts, humanities and the social sciences to address the human needs and aspects of medicine and healthcare. It encompasses art, health design and communications, visual culture, drama, music, literature, narrative medicine, art therapy, health promotion, the history of medicine, medical anthropology, ethics, environment and health, and much more.

The Department of Art and Design seeks submissions for FAB Gallery Exhibition

This call for submissions is open to current U of A Department of Art and Design graduate students and senior undergraduate students. Quotationalism is a call for visual work to question, meditate on and rework the problem of visual quotation. It will provide a forum for response to and redefinition of the objects that will be on view in the first exhibition of the China's Imperial Modern series -- itself an exploration of the place of the copy in the painter's practice in imperial China. Both shows will run concurrently at the University of Alberta during The Works.
