ABACUS, reorganized in 2011, is a cardiovascular and stroke research centre integrating clinical research activities for out-patients. It allows for research in a high tech tertiary hospital without affecting clinical waitlists and provides researchers the ability to perform research studies in close collaboration with clinical departments.
Currently, ABACUS accommodates an established Cardiovascular Ultrasound Research Unit as well as a Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic. It also houses several research coordinators looking after numerous patients in different research studies.
Located in level 0 of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, ABACUS is strategically aligned with and seamlessly integrated into the Heart Institute, the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Alberta Health Services and has the capacity to support research on subjects with various cardiovascular conditions.
