Researchers Shrawan Kumar Ph.D., D.Sc. F. Erg. S.
Dr. Kumar is currently a professor in physical therapy in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and in the division of Neuroscience, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta. He joined the faculty in 1977 and rose to the rank of full professor in 1982. Dr. Kumar holds B.Sc. [Biology and Chemistry] and M.Sc. [Zoology] degrees from the university of Allahabad, India and a Ph.D. [Human Biology] degree from the University of Surrey, U.K. Following his Ph.D. he did his post doctoral work at Trinity College, Dublin, in engineering, and worked as a research associate at the University of Toronto in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. For his life-time work, Dr. Kumar was recognized by the University of Surrey, U.K. by the award of a D.Sc. degree in 1994. Dr. Kumar was invited as a visiting professor for the year 1983-1984 at the University of Michigan, Department of Industrial Engineering. He was a McCalla Professor in 1984-1985 and was recently recognized as a Killam Professor in 1997-1998. He is the recipient of the Sir Frederic Bartlett Medal form the Ergonomics Society, UK (1997) and Distinguished International Colleague Award form the Human Factors and Ergonomic's Society, USA. In addition to these Dr. Kumar was also recognized in 1997 by the Human Factors and Ergonomic's Society for excellence in research in ergonomics and development of ergonomic methodology. Dr. Kumar has over 250 scientific peer-reviewed publications, and works in the area of musculoskeletal injury causation/prevention with a special emphasis on low back pain. He has edited/authored nine books/monographs. He currently holds a grant from NSERC. His work has been supported by MRC, WCB and NRC. He has supervised or is supervising ten M.Sc. students, three Ph.D. students, and three post-doctoral students. He is editor of the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, Consulting Editor of Ergonomics, Advisory Editor of Spine, and Assistant Editor of the Transactions of Rehabilitation Engineering. He serves as the Assistant Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Rehabilitation Engineering, as the Book Editor of the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, and on the editorial board of Disability and Rehabilitation: An International Multidisciplinary journal. He has edited two special issues of the International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics and the Advances in Industrial Ergonomics and Safety IV. In addition, he has co-edited a special issue of Human Factors, and Ergonomics on Fatigue and Telecommunication, respectively. Mr. Narayan obtained his B.Sc. in electrical engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada. He specializes in digital signal processing and software design/development. After graduating he worked on research projects in biomedical engineering at the Grey Nuns Hospital, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Dr. Zedka is originally from the Czech Republic where he received an M.D. degree from Charles University Medical School in Prague in 1992. After teaching courses in Human Anatomy at Charles University Medical School, he came to the University of Alberta where he is currently a Ph.D. student within the Department of Neuroscience, Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Zedka's research interests are in the area of neuroscience and low back pain. Dr. Zedka's doctoral work is supervised by Dr. Kumar. Mr. Amell obtained his Honors B.Sc. degree in Human Kinetics in 1995 from the University of Ottawa, in Ottawa, Canada and his M.Sc. degree in Rehabilitation Science in 1997 from Queen's University at Kingston, Canada. Mr. Amell has worked on projects with the Queen's University Ergonomics Research Group as well with the Canadian Space Agency. Mr. Amell's research interests lie in musculoskeletal injury prevention/causation as well as in the cost effectiveness of ergonomic programs. Tyler is a B.C.P.E. certified Associate Ergonomics Professional and is a student member of H.F.A.C. Mr. Amell is currently a Ph.D. student working under Dr. Kumar.
