The Women's Centre requires writers, photographers, artists, columnists, and busy little hands (or big hands- we exercise no prejudice) to help in the production of a feminist zine. Our general requirements for this project are that all submissions must be FEMALE-FRIENDLY, LOCALLY RELEVANT (Edmonton, Alberta), and have absolutely NO dependence on worn CLICHES!

Here are the content guidelines we are looking to fill:

  • INFORMATION: brief news, events, calendar (for up to four months from publication)
  • RESOURCES: useful websites, seldom appreciated books, recommended phonebook professionals
  • ACTIVISM: do-it-yourself, political action organization tips, women-centered political issues *ALTERNATIVE HEALTH: unconventional physical activities, cheap-student-friendly vegan recipes, natural healing/alternative medicine, sex talk (any and all) *ALTERNATIVE CULTURE: "mixed tape" (submit favourite artists and songs; double points for females), local visual/tactile artists, local musicians and groups, local writers, photographers
  • HERSTORY: "super-rad-women no one knows about" (the story of revolutionary women who are often overlooked), personal journeys to feminism (what feminism means to YOU?), your family herstory (who are the inspirational women of your family?s past?), your positive body image story
  • FUN: "super-hero alter-ego" (design and explain your very own), comics, contest ideas (we have prizes!), "do-before-you-die" (the ultimate list!), personal anecdotes (roommates, moving, relationships, school, work? usually funny!), before-and-after reclamation projects (have you salvaged an old coffee table, or a grandmother?s sweater?)

We are also looking for general submissions to add to a beautiful ?zine layout. Some things include: photographs, "clip-art" (really, ALL kinds of art) and personal quotations (no famous folks, please). And! We?re still searching for a TITLE! Help us create our content, and name what you?ve produced! Lastly, we are looking to form a working group, which would help us produce this seasonal ?zine and others. The only requirement is fresh ideas and a little bit of extra time to donate!

The first issue of this ?zine is due September 2008, but we require all submissions by the end of May 2008. For more information, contact Jessica and Teri at the Women's Centre, uawwc@ualberta.ca or check out the Centre's webpage
