Supporting our diverse university community through primary-affirmed names

Set to launch this summer, this new functionality will allow faculty, staff and students the ability to use and identify themselves by their chosen name.

Our names are an important part of our identity — they tell our stories and reflect our culture and background. Everyone has the right to be called by the name that reflects their true self, which may be different than their legal name.

In the spirit of supporting our commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion across our people, campuses and disciplines, we are pleased to announce the upcoming launch of the primary-affirmed name functionality at the University of Alberta in early July.

This initiative enables all university faculty, staff and students to identify themselves by the name that they wish to be recognized as a member of the university community — what we refer to as “primary-affirmed” names at the U of A. The primary-affirmed name functionality will empower every member of the university community to equally enjoy what many may take for granted — the simple use of their name.

In support of our strategic priorities related to EDI, Shape: A Strategic Plan of Impact, 2023-33, Strategy 5.1 in Braiding Past, Present and Future and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action 17, this initiative is a step forward in the university taking action that meaningfully centres respect, dignity, safety, equity, reclamation, resurgence and care. It is a prime example of how the university can live out the values and commitments made to students, faculty and staff by coming together across different portfolios to remove barriers and find solutions. This functionality will have a significant impact on ensuring all members of the community are included and receive the respect and care they deserve. Introducing the primary-affirmed name functionality in Bear Tracks is an important step toward honouring these commitments.

While systems, processes, and reports downstream of the primary-affirmed name fields may not be able to parse Indigenous syllabics and other multi-language characters at this time, we will continue to review this functionality with a view to further enhancing system capability, such as the addition of multi-language characters, phonetic spelling and pronouns.

We encourage you to visit the primary-affirmed name web page for more information, including frequently asked questions, resources and support.
