On Aug. 28, a delegation of leaders from the University of Alberta, led by Chancellor Peggy Garritty and Board Chair Kate Chisholm, travelled to Winnipeg for a special ceremony to confer an honorary Doctorate of Laws on the Honourable Murray Sinclair. Sinclair is the first Indigenous Judge in Manitoba and Canada’s second, and the driving force behind the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, he delivered the commencement address to graduates in Fall 2021 virtually — this special event allowed us to confer the honorary degree in person.
