Since the last update in April 2022, the Alberta History Mural Project Working Group has been diligently responding to feedback inquiries and investigating several options around the future of the Alberta History mural. Specifically, at the request of community feedback, we have been looking into the possibilities of conserving the mural in place or removing the mural without destruction, among other options.
Conserving the Mural In Place
So far, our investigation into the feasibility of keeping the mural in-place and conserving has identified two main considerations. The first is that no technique could guarantee the long-term successful conservation of the mural. While there may be options that could stabilize it over short periods of time, the long-term care would require constant resources. The second being that an environmental control system at the room level or a micro-environment structure encasing the mural would be essential to stabilize the environment and prevent continued deterioration. Both options discussed for in-place conservation would require structural engineering and would require considerable resources.
Removal of the Mural without Destruction
The working group also looked into the removal of the mural without destruction in order to conserve and ultimately store the work of art. Both methods investigated were cost-prohibitive and likely not feasible in terms of long-term preservation, display, or storage due to the size of the work of art and the need for environmental controls.
While we continue to gather information on these processes - including quotes, considerations, and feedback - with current information, the options do not appear to be a viable solution and we are still working towards a final decision on the Alberta History mural. I want to assure the U of A community that whatever decision is made, will not be done lightly and without careful consideration.
In order for us to move forward on this project, we are aiming to conclude community consultations by hosting two events for the public and community to attend. Details on the events and how to attend are listed below.
As we have stated before, inaction around the mural is not an option and we truly appreciate everyone who has discussed this mural with us and shared their comments and feedback. We look forward to concluding the consultation portion of this project and in the meantime continue to encourage feedback and comments throughout the process via our online feedback form and invite anyone to visit our project web page for updates.
