I am pleased to announce that Dr. Thomas Stelfox will join the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) in the inaugural role of Deputy Dean effective September 1, 2023.
Dr. Stelfox is currently a professor of critical care medicine and director of the O’Brien Institute for Public Health at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. He received his MD from the University of Alberta, completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Toronto, earned a PhD in health care policy at Harvard University and did a critical care fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He previously served as joint clinical and academic chair of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services. His research focuses on the application of health-services research methods to improve the quality of health-care delivery to critically ill patients.
As a proud alumnus of our MD program, Dr. Stelfox has strong ties in Edmonton and is thrilled to be returning to the FoMD and the University of Alberta to support our collective work.
As Deputy Dean, Dr. Stelfox will work closely with myself and the Dean’s Executive Committee (DEC) to manage the academic and operational functions of the faculty as I assume the role of College Dean and Vice-Provost for the College of Health Sciences on July 1 while retaining my role as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. The Deputy Dean is also responsible for ensuring the FoMD Vision 2025 strategic plan moves forward.
Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Stelfox to our university community.
Dr. Brenda Hemmelgarn
Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry
