Have you met Amanda Brown, supervisor of the Awards team in the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research? Spend a few minutes getting to know her better.
What is your first U of A memory?
The earliest memory that stands out clearly for me is entering a department for an interview and meeting a few of the staff at the front desk. There was an immediate connection and those individuals ended up becoming some of my closest and sassiest long-time friends.
What’s something your coworkers don’t know about you?
I used to have an amazing memory and did not need to write everything down in a planner.
What’s your favourite distraction?
Any activity that gets me outside and preferably into nature. I particularly enjoy hiking and camping in the mountains on a weekend or during vacation. For an easy distraction during the day, walking my dog in the river valley is a great way for me to reset.
If you were enrolling in one course, program or degree right now, what would it be?
In another life I would’ve pursued an MD. For fun at the moment, I would take some additional courses in psychology.
What’s a weird pet peeve you have?
Rudeness and/or unkindness in any form.
You can invite anyone — alive or dead, real or fictional — to dinner. Who would it be?
My grandmothers. They both passed away when I was rather young, and I would love to have a conversation with them now as an adult.
If you could see any live performance tomorrow, what would it be?
I would love to see the Tragically Hip live again one more time.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Sacrifice is not a compromise, always pay yourself first and drink more water!
What’s one thing you can’t live without?
Definitely my spouse and children!
What three words describe your U of A experience?
Transformative. Eventful. Entertaining.
