Have you met Tyree, career advisor at the Career Centre (and mushroom foraging hobbyist)? Spend a few minutes getting to know him a little bit better.

What is your first U of A memory?

In my youth, Edmonton seemed a world away — although I grew up just down the road in Calgary. I would see the inside of the Butterdome on trips here for wrestling tournaments. Entering the ’dome now, with its distinctive smell and atmosphere, still causes a visceral reaction. I get butterflies and a shot of adrenaline.

What’s something your coworkers don’t know about you?

I sang in a youth choir and played in hand-bell choir at church during my early teens as my mom was the director.

What’s your favourite distraction?

With most sports out during the pandemic, it’s a toss-up between skateboarding and foraging for wild mushrooms.

If you were enrolling in one course, program or degree right now, what would it be?

Master of Arts in Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation.

What’s a weird pet peeve you have?

Hearing people adopt and mimic speech patterns and pronunciations from American television and popular culture.

You can invite anyone — alive or dead, real or fictional — to dinner. Who would it be?

Iranian Olympic wrestling champion Gholamreza Takhti.

If you could see any live performance tomorrow, what would it be?

A live gig with The English Beat and Stiff Little Fingers.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Have the confidence to be kind and friendly to everyone. Also, invest in Bitcoin one day.

What’s one thing you can’t live without?

Participating in sporting activities.

What three words describe your U of A experience?

Growth, connection, opportunity.
