Have you met David, Prospective Student Advisor in the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation (and soon-to-be International Financial Support Coordinator in the Office of the Registrar)? Spend a few minutes getting to know him a little better.
What is your first U of A memory?
All of my older siblings attended the U of A, so I have lots of early memories of campus — moving my brother into Lister, getting tours of the Engineering spaces with my other brother, and my sister showing us her walking route to campus (before there was an LRT)!
What’s something your coworkers don’t know about you?
The help I received from my advisors when I was a student is what made me want to come back to campus to give the same support to future students!
What’s your favourite distraction?
Video games or knitting while watching old reruns of Friends.
If you were enrolling in one course, program or degree right now, what would it be?
I should say a Bachelor of Commerce or something similar based on the type of work I do now, but I would love to go back and take the Bachelor of Arts in Recreation, Sport, and Tourism degree! I love studying wellness and how to improve people’s quality of life through recreation, so this would be a really fun program.
What’s a weird pet peeve you have?
While I was in university I worked in retail and as a waiter, so I have no patience when friends are rude to retail workers or service staff who are trying their hardest. It’s a pretty tough job and there’s often a lot more going on than people would know about.
You can invite anyone — alive or dead, real or fictional — to dinner. Who would it be?
I absolutely love the character of Molly Weasley from the Harry Potter series, so I would totally want to have dinner with her!
If you could see any live performance tomorrow, what would it be?
My brothers and I grew up listening to Rise Against every morning when we would drive to school, so I would love to go to their concerts anytime. Otherwise, any of the icons: Cher, Beyonce, Gaga, etc.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
It’s absolutely okay to study one thing and then work somewhere else — interests and passions can change over time! Also, call your Mom.
What’s one thing you can’t live without?
It’s so cliche, but my family. They are everything to me.
What three words describe your U of A experience?
Intense, welcoming, and ever-changing.
