This week, we recap the accolades and achievements from November and December, including a Rhodes scholarship, Top 40 Under 40 recipients, professors named to the Order of Canada, and more! Without further ado, congratulations to the following:

  • Janine Brodie, Distinguished Professor, Faculty of Arts - named to Order of Canada.
  • Liz Ingram, Distinguished Professor, Faculty of Arts - named to Order of Canada.
  • Julia Sawatzky, Student, Faculty of Medicine - awarded a 2019 Rhodes Scholarship.
  • Robert Burrell, Chair, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and professor, Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Faculty of Engineering - has become a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.
  • Jennifer Raso, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law - her paper "Displacement as Regulation: New Regulatory Technologies and Front-Line Decision-Making in Ontario Works" was named the best article published by The Canadian Journal of Law & Society.
  • Kerry Courneya, Professor, Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation - named the co-recipient of the Cancer Society's O. Harold Warwick Prize for outstanding achievements in cancer control research.
  • Jean Vance, Professor, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - awarded the Wilhelm Bernhard Prize for outstanding contributions to the field of membrane contact sites.
  • Michael Houghton, Professor, Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - received the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award from the American Liver Foundation for his groundbreaking work on hepatitis C and D .
  • Michael Lounsbury, Professor and Director, Alberta School of Business - named a Highly Cited Researcher for 2018, and elected to become a Fellow of the Academy of Management for his contributions to the science and practice of management.
  • Royston Greenwood, Professor, Alberta School of Business - named a Highly Cited Researcher for 2018, and elected to become a Fellow of the Academy of Management for his contributions to the science and practice of management.
  • Thomas Chalifoux, Student, Alberta School of Business - named Co-op Student of the Year by Business Career Services.
  • Thomas Schoen, Instructor, Augustana Campus - won Teacher of Distinction Award.
  • Zhenghe Xu, Professor and Research Chair, Faculty of Engineering - won Outstanding Achievement in Science & Engineering Award.
  • Leijun Li (Professor), Jason Wang (Graduate Student), and Rangasayee Kannan (Graduate Student), Faculty of Engineering - won the Warren F. Savage Memorial Award.
  • Rylan Kafara, PhD Student - named to Avenue Magazine's 2018 Top 40 Under 40 list.
  • Michiko Maruyama, Cardiac Surgery Resident - named to Avenue Magazine's 2018 Top 40 Under 40 list.
  • Dave Collins, Professor, Faculty of Kinesiology - won 2018 TEC Edmonton Innovation Award.
  • Zac Robinson, Associate Professor, Faculty of Kinesiology - recognized by Royal Canadian Geographical Society College of Fellows.
  • Dong-Woo Kang, Student, Faculty of Kinesiology - awarded Korean Canadian Graduate Scholarship.
  • Helene Jørgensen, Student, Faculty of Kinesiology - won 2018 Alberta Graduate Citizenship Award.
  • Haley Heffel and Aidan McKeage, Students, Faculty of Kinesiology - named to the Canadian Roster for the U23 World Wrestling Championships.
  • Ben Throndson, Student, Faculty of Law, won 2018 Lou Hyndman Edmonton Glenora Award.
  • Nicholas Ashbolt, Professor, Faculty of Public Health - named International Water Association Fellow.
  • Stuart Cleary, Professor, Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine - received Alberta College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists Honours of the College award.
  • Yunjie Xu, Professor, Faculty of Science - inducted to Royal Society of Canada.

On November 11, the University of Alberta received the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) Gold Award for Leadership and Pervasiveness in internationalization.

On November 28, TEC Edmonton held its annual Innovation Awards - congratulations to all of the patent award recipients and U of A spin-off companies recognized this year!
