Have you met Sandy, Learning Solutions Coordinator with the Technology Training Centre? Spend the next 2 minutes getting to know her a little better.
Where is your favorite place on campus?
Main Quad. There’s always something going on there — it’s like the Central Park of the university.
Tablet or paper?
Paper. Always. I like putting pen to paper, it’s kind of therapeutic. And I like to-do lists.
Name one thing you’ve brought to work from home.
A photo with my kids.
What is the one thing you can’t live without?
Coffee.
[Editor’s note: she was, in fact, drinking coffee during our interview]
If you won airfare to anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Greece. It’s number one on my bucket list. I really like the history of the Greek isles.
You can invite anyone — alive or dead, real or fictional — to dinner. Who would it be?
Zaha Hadid. She was an architect, and she just passed away last year. She did amazing work — her buildings are unbelievable. I’d like to talk to her about where her ideas came from. She was also a female in a field that’s fairly male dominated.
I actually have my certificate in Interior Residential Design from the Faculty of Extension. I really like design.
If you could switch jobs with someone else on campus for a week, what would you do?
In the summer, I’d switch with the people who landscape the university. But in the fall or winter, I’d want to be somewhere working with students. We deal with a lot of staff in the TTC, but we don’t really get to work with students.
What does “uplifting the whole people” mean to you?
To me, it’s about the benefits that the university brings — not just to the staff that work here, or the students, but the benefits felt worldwide. The research that’s done here benefits people all over. We also have a very large international student population, and what they take with them when they leave benefits people everywhere.
If you could solve any problem in the world, what would it be?
Climate change. I have kids, who one day (possibly) will have kids — I wonder: what’s it going to be like for them?
What 3 words best describe your U of A experience?
Challenging. Inspirational. Multifaceted.
