Division of Urology trailblazes female representation in its residency program

26 June 2024

When Dr. Alex Bain (left) and Dr. Betty Wang (right) joined the Division of Urology they were the only two female residents starting a career in what Dr. Wang says has been traditionally a man's specialty. When they graduated this year, female residents accounted for almost half (6 out of 13) of all residents. Dr. Sabrina Pattar, Urology PGY-1 Resident (Center) says, “It’s been such an incredible experience joining the Urology Program this past year with so many other women. Betty and Alex have been outstanding role models and leaders among our resident cohort!” In addition to being a role model, Dr. Wang actively advocated a career in Urology to female medical students.
Residency Program Director, Dr. Peter Metcalfe says, “Alex and Betty have been incredible role models for our residency program and their leadership has blossomed while developing their clinical and non-clinical skills. They have been amazing ambassadors for our program and have tirelessly promoted it to many CaRMS applicants. Their experience as female residents in a “traditionally male dominated” specialty resonates with many, as the numbers of female residents has boomed during their residency.”
