Setting foot outside on campus, there's an unmistakable change in the air. Fall is on its way, and it's the start of a new semester. As we say farewell to summer, join us in thanking the 40 students-and the many supporters on campus-who spent their summer welcoming nearly 1,800 campers to the University of Alberta as part of Science Summer Camps.
"Summer Camps provide a fun environment for campers to learn more about topics they're passionate about-and introduce them to new ones," said Dalton Ronan, one of the Science Summer Camps senior leaders and a graduate of the Faculty of Science. "Having UAlberta students instructing campers and showing them first-hand some of the amazing programs and resources we have on campus is a great way to get the next generation excited about science."
Over the past two months, 35 camp leaders and five senior leaders have shared their love of science with campers each week, diving into exciting projects and activities in camps covering topics from chemistry to space, and from nature to Minecraft.
"As a UAlberta student, the Science Summer Camps are a great way for me to get to work in a position related to my field of study and use some of the knowledge I've gained throughout my studies," said Ronan. "Getting to share my passion for science while representing and showcasing the faculty that I'm proud to be a part of every day is an amazing opportunity-and an even better summer job."
The eight weeks of camps saw the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS) buzzing with activity every day-from groups on their way to tour the impressive museums and collections on campus to playing outside over the lunch hour.
"I'll always associate my first few weeks on campus with the sounds of science campers on the Quad and in CCIS," said new dean of the Faculty of Science Matina Kalcounis-Rueppell. "I wish all the best to the camp leaders this upcoming year."
To the 40 camp leaders and all the tour guides, guest experts, and supporters who made another fantastic year of Science Summer Camps possible: thank you from the Faculty of Science!
