Gain competency in orthodontics. This two-part module combines a theory exam with a hands-on portion. After passing the components, you can apply to your regulatory body to practice orthodontics in a clinical setting.

Theory component
Online | Tuition $250 | Unlimited capacity
The orthodontic theory component is a guided, self-study course administered through eClass. It’s recommended that you take at least three months before your desired exam date to complete the theory component and written exam.
Clinical Component
Hands-on | Tuition $1,250 | Limited capacity
After passing the theory exam, you can register and attend the in-person clinical component. You will get hands-on practice with separators banding, bonding, radiology, digital scanners, photography and archwires.

Exams
Exams are held at the University of Alberta on the first Monday of each month. You can also arrange another testing centre, such as other universities, colleges, libraries or schools. The exam must be completed a minimum of three weeks before attending the in-person clinical component, and once you pass, you have one year to enroll in the clinical portion.

Class format
In-person dates are held in Edmonton, at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic, and run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. MST.

The online content is available online via our eClass platform and is in a self-paced, self-study format (no in-person attendance required).
Online materials are accessible for one year.

Dr. Manuel Lagravère
Director, Applied Oral Health Research Unit
Dr. Manuel Lagravère, DDS, MSc, PhD, is a professor, speaker and researcher. His publications include several book chapters and over 150 peer-reviewed papers.
After graduating with a masters of science, Lagravère moved to Edmonton to pursue his PhD in orthodontics at the University of Alberta, which he completed in 2009. Immediately following his convocation, Lagravère was awarded a fellowship from the College of Dentists of Canada in the specialty of orthodontics and dental facial orthopedics. He also has a clinical trial expert certification.
His research focuses on improving the mastication process, or chewing of food, in children and adolescents. Lagravère is also interested in how the bones in the upper and lower jaws affect breathing and the production of growth hormones. Currently, he is working on an artificial intelligence model to analyze airways and determine if some orthodontic treatments are more suitable than others in helping reduce sleep apnea in children.
