UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA ANNOUNCES 2017/18 MAINSTAGE CONCERT SEASON

Edmonton, AB -- The University of Alberta Department of Music has announced their 2017/18 mainstage concert season, including music from classical composers like Tchaikovsky, Bach and Beethoven, as well as contemporary works from movie soundtrack master, John Williams.

Presented at Convocation Hall and the Francis Winspear Centre for Music, the concert season presents elite music student ensembles, choirs, bands, the University Symphony Orchestra, faculty performers and vocalists, including acclaimed international guest artists. The Mainstage series will feature our faculty and students alongside esteemed musicians from the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, including ESO Concertmaster, Robert Uchida.

Highlights from the 2017/18 concert season include:

Volk for Chamber Music

Featuring the music of Schubert, Schumann and Brahms, Volk highlights the melodic and popular folk styles of these classical composers.

Alumni Weekend
Sep 24, 2017 at 1 PM | Convocation Hall
An afternoon of popular favourites performed by the students of the University Symphony Orchestra and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

Russian Soul
October 20, 2017 at 7:30 PM | Convocation Hall
An intense evening of Russian music including works by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Shostakovich's Trio No. 2.

Early Modern Keyboard
November 5, 2017 at 3 PM | Convocation Hall

This selection of Baroque and classical music from Bach, Haydn and Schubert illustrates the history of the keyboard from the early 1700s to the 1800s.

Bach's Christmas Oratorio
December 3, 2017 at 3 PM | Winspear Centre

Celebrate the season with Bach's Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248, including performances by the Madrigal Singers, Concert Choir and University Symphony Orchestra.

Violinissimo III

A collection of well and lesser known works for violin and piano, transcribed or composed by violinists.

Turning Points: Chamber Music for Mixed Ensembles

Inspired by jazz and popular music of the 1920s, Turning Points showcases the music of Milhaud, Svanoe and Weill.

Robert Cohen: Classic Cello

UAlberta Distinguished Visitor Robert Cohen is hailed as one of the foremost cellists of our time. Cohen and Patricia Tao (piano) perform a repertoire of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.

Winds and Roses

University of Alberta High School Honour Band Weekend

The High School Honour Band joins the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Department of Music Concerto Competition winner in a grand weekend finale at the Winspear.

Masterworks for Piano

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Concert Band join forces to showcase soundtrack works by John Williams and other leading film composers.

Symphonic Dances

The University Symphony Orchestra will perform Rachmaninoff's final composition highlighting evocative shifting harmonies and rhythmic vitality.

Kilburn Memorial Concert

The Kilburn Memorial Concert is an annual event showcasing esteemed Canadian and international artists, made possible by the Nicholas Arthur Kilburn Memorial Endowment Fund.
