From Trash to Treasure: An Exhibit of Brazilian "Cartonera" Books
5 October 2023
Join us for the opening reception and website launch of From Trash to Treasure: An Exhibit of Brazilian "Cartonera" Books on Thursday, October 5, at 3:30 p.m. (MDT) in Henderson Hall, Rutherford Library South. The event features virtual guest speakers Evandro Rodrigues from Katarina Kartonera and Dirce Waltrick do Amarante from the Federal University of Santa Catarina. Register here.
About the exhibit: In 2001, during a severe financial crisis in Latin America, people known as 'cartoneros,' a term derived from the Spanish word 'cartón,' meaning 'cardboard,' took to the streets to earn a living by recycling cardboard. In a show of solidarity, artists and writers purchased this cardboard to create affordable and sustainable books featuring unique handcrafted covers. From October 1 - 31, you can explore Bruce Peel's remarkable collection of over 50 Brazilian "Cartonera" books—the only one of its kind in Canada. The exhibit is located in the Rutherford South Foyer. For more information, email Odile Cisneros at cisneros@ualberta.ca.
