Publication title: Erythroid precursors and progenitors suppress adaptive immunity and get invaded by SARS-CoV-2

How would you describe your research project to someone without a scientific background?

In this study, we discovered that immature red blood cells become abundant in the blood circulation of COVID-19 patients, while they are nearly absent in the blood of healthy individuals. As a result of this expansion, the immune response against COVID-19 infection is weakened because these cells suppress the immune system.

Also, we found that immature red blood cells were highly susceptible to COVID-19 infection. It is likely that immature red blood cells get infected and eliminated by the COVID-19 virus. This could help to explain lower blood oxygen levels seen in COVID-19 patients.

What impact did your publication have within the field or otherwise?

This study provides a novel insight into how SARS-CoV-2 overcomes the immune system and attacks the oxygen-transporting cells in the body.

On a positive note, we also discovered that dexamethasone, a steroid, can reduce COVID-19 infection of immature red blood cells.

Briefly describe your role with the publication (in non-scientific terms).

I made a substantial contribution to this study and performed approximately 85% of the work. My work started with blood collection from the hospital to blood sample processing and conducting a wide range of experiments. It was very intense work: 7 days a week from 8.30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on most of the days and from April to December 2020.

Post publication, how will the research be continued, and will you have a continued role?

This paper opened a new avenue of research of appreciating the role of immature red blood cells in other conditions. Moreover, we have continued our studies and have two articles under review that stemmed from this study.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Work hard, make sacrifices, be creative, and never ever give up.

What is one thing you cannot live without?

I cannot leave without learning and exploring new realms.
