October 14, 2015, The Health Sciences Council is pleased to advise that three research teams have secured space in the Discovery Mall in the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy. The successful applicants are:

- Bariatric Care and Rehabilitation Group (BCRRG)
- Canadian North Helicobacter pylori Working Group (CANHelp)
- Edmonton Cardio-Oncology Research Group (ENCORE)

The Discovery Mall, the east side of the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy that is defined by its brightly coloured exterior finish, was purpose built to meet the unique needs of interdisciplinary research. The flexible layouts and furnishings provide teams with space where they can meet and develop research ideas into relevant health research questions; this is critical to designing solid proposals for funding and/or other supports.

"We are very pleased to welcome these teams to the ECHA community," said Health Sciences Council Chair and Dean of Nursing, Anita Molzahn. "Providing space for collaboration is one of ways the Council facilitates interdisciplinary learning, discovery and citizenship across disciplines."

The Health Sciences Council is a formal administrative arrangement through which the health science faculties work to strengthen collaboration between equals. The Council comprises the deans from all faculties and schools with health sciences activities and has a mandate to lead and enable interprofessional education and interdisciplinary research. These two areas comprise the essential academic support for interdisciplinary excellence.

"Having access to space where we can gather as a large, interdisciplinary team provides a rich opportunity to develop our research and increases our ability to build our teams capacity through space for trainees and visitors," said Mary Forhan of the Bariatric Care and rehabilitation Group. "Research focused on improving the quality of care for patients with severe obesity and reducing the disability experience involves expertise and knowledge from rehabilitation medicine, nursing, industrial design, internal medicine, surgery and so many more. We are looking forward to using our new space to expand our team to include patients whose contributions are essential to informing the research direction of our team."

The Discovery Mall includes 2500m2 of research team space that runs the length of the east side of the top three floors of the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy. The Health Sciences Council holds 800m2 of the total area. In June 2015, the Council held an open competition for three specific areas within that space; three teams were chosen from a total of ten applicants. Together, these teams include researchers and students from diverse faculties, schools and departments including Nursing, Anthropology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Bioengineering, Public Health, Art & Design, and Medicine & Dentistry.
