Our community is remembering and honouring Dr. Maya Bhatia and her contributions as a world-leading biogeochemist, arctic climate researcher, and dedicated associate professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Dr. Bhatia’s research focused on the impact of melting glaciers, ice caps, and ice sheets on Arctic ecosystems and global biogeochemical cycles. She and her team worked in close collaboration with community members in the Inuit hamlet of Aujuittuq, and pursued answers to questions of concern to the community, including water quality and climate change.
The University of Alberta banner will fly at half-mast on August 16 to 18 in recognition that one year has passed since the tragic loss of Dr. Bhatia. As we remember and honour the legacy of Dr. Bhatia and her work, many in our community, across the country, and beyond, continue to dearly miss Maya. To family, friends, colleagues, students, research partners and community partners, we offer our deepest condolences.
