What is your first U of A memory?
My first memory of the U of A was waiting for my very first university class in the foyer of the Medical Sciences building. Little did I know that getting to my next class in Tory in a 10 minute window was a bad idea!
What’s something your coworkers don’t know about you?
Les Misérables is one of my favourite musicals and I have three degrees all from the U of A (Master of Business Administration, Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Science.)
What’s your favourite distraction?
Travelling. Give me the sunshine, the adventure, the relaxation but most importantly, a new experience.
If you were enrolling in one course, program or degree right now, what would it be?
I still debate doing a PhD in Organizational Theory. There is something about how people and technology come together to perform functions and how they evolve makes me curious.
You can invite anyone — alive or dead, real or fictional — to dinner. Who would it be?
It probably depends on my mood. Today, Malcolm Gladwell. I loved Blink and his other books.
If you could see any live performance tomorrow, what would it be?
Watching my son perform in any ballet. He currently dances professionally with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Don’t be so shy.
What’s one thing you can’t live without?
My kids and family. I love when we can all get together, it fills my spirit. I love seeing where the kids are going in life.
What words describe your U of A experience?
Learning and meaningful relationships.

Tom Hidson is one of three Assistant Registrar’s of Enrolment Services in the Office of the Registrar - Undergraduate Records. The U of A has been his home for more than three decades. From being an undergraduate student to starting a career at the university in the late 1990s, and then completing his masters degree in 2007. His experience in the Office of the Registrar spans the student life cycle and now primarily focuses on registration, records and fees.
