The University of Alberta banner is flying at half-mast from June 5–8, 2020 in remembrance of Ms. Deborah Gougeon, Assistant Registrar in the Office of the Registrar.
Deborah Gougeon passed away on May 23, 2020. She was such a strong and loving person, who was always there for her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by her daughters Amanda and Andrea Gougeon, her brothers, Barry Roach and Brian Roach (Karen), nieces Samantha and Madison, mother–in-law Ida Gougeon, brother-in-law Robert Gougeon, and cousin Richard Maki (Karen). She was predeceased by her beloved husband Philip and her mother and father, Ann and Carl Roach. Born and raised in Thunder Bay (Port Arthur), Ontario, Deborah earned a BA in English Literature from Lakehead University. Moving to Alberta, she made her home with Philip on an acreage and began her career in the Registrar’s office at the University of Alberta in 1975, in 1981 she left to raise her daughters for the next 10 years.
After returning to the U of A in 1991, she worked her way to Assistant Registrar of Admissions. She retired from the University in 2013 and went on to travel to Paris, New York, Hawaii, and other places with her husband Phil and their friends. After his passing in 2016, she moved to Sherwood Park and found kinship in the community there. She took joy in her flowers and gardening, yoga classes, and cherished the time she spent with her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to the cancer research foundation of your choice would be appreciated. A service will be held at Glenwood Funeral Home, with a eulogy by her close friend, Audrey Landry.
