This week, the University of Alberta is celebrating the 2016 World Agriculture Award, a citation in a Supreme Court of Canada decision, inductions into the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) and more! So, congrats to the following:
- Lorne Babiuk, Vice-President (Research) Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Science, Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences - awarded the 2016 World Agriculture Award by the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agriculture and Life Sciences for significant lifetime achievement in the fields of medicine and agriculture.
- Barbara Billingsley, Professor, Faculty of Law - her treatise "General Principles of Canadian Insurance Law" was cited twice in the September 15, 2016 Supreme Court judgment in Ledcor Construction Ltd. v. Northbridge Indemnity Insurance Co.
- Sheldon Cannon, Student, Faculty of Science and Peter Lougheed Leadership College - winner of a 2016 Schulich Leader Scholarship.
- Bruce Dancik, Professor Emeritus, Department of Renewable Resources, Faculty of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences - elected as a member of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) for his work on population genetics and the evolution of woody plants.
- Savannah Dubien, Student - named the Athlete of the Week
- Duane Froese, Associate Professor, Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Faculty of Science - named named to the RSC's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists for his work on permafrost in North America.
- Joanna Harrington, Professor, Faculty of Law - part of a team that received $2.5 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to help victims of mass atrocity crimes.
- Zamaneh Kassiri, Associate Professor, Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - named to the RSC's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists for her work on the extracellular matrix (ECM) and how it relates to cardiovascular diseases.
- Isabelle Le Breton-Miller, Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Entrepreneurship & Family Enterprise, Alberta School of Business - named to the RSC's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists for her work on establishing family business as an academic discipline.
- Candace Nykiforuk, Associate Professor, School of Public Health - named to the RSC's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists for her work in public health and chronic disease prevention.
- Graham Pearson, Professor, Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Faculty of Science - inducted into the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) for his work on deep continental roots and diamond formations.
- Lynne-Marie Postovit, Associate Professor, Department of Oncology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - named to the RSC's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists for her work on therapies and biomarkers for cancer.
- Richard Sutton, Professor, Department of Computing Science, Faculty of Science - elected to the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) for his work on artificial intelligence as a computational tool.
