Outreach and Community Health

As Alberta’s leading higher education institution and health research hub, the University of Alberta is dedicated to improving health outcomes for both the university community and the City of Edmonton. To achieve this, the university implements outreach programs focused on health and well-being, including nutrition, family planning, and exercise. Learn more here

Key initiatives include the Community Engagement Electives for pre-clerkship medical students, which  are based on five themes: global health advocacy, international health, reproductive and sexual health, Indigenous health and inner-city health. These electives emphasize social accountability, allowing students to engage with diverse community groups - often disadvantaged people and refugees - living in the city’s core.

Additionally, the CHANGE Health Community Program (CHCP), in partnership with Alberta Blue Cross and University of Alberta’s Department of Family Medicine, is a unique, free program which supports families to “re-learn healthy living” in their communities, and encourages families and community members to pursue healthier lifestyles through four main areas: nutrition, physical activity, mental health and social connection.
