Learn About the SDGs
Dr. Robert Summers on the SDGs
“The modern era has brought tremendous prosperity to much of the world. Its benefits, however, have been tremendously uneven among the world’s population, and our economic processes are putting significant strain on ecosystems. The SDGs call for a prosperity that is broad-based and holistic.”
The SDG Academy creates and curates free online courses on the headline issues and a multitude of topics related to the Sustainable Development Goals. Learn from faculty who work at the United Nations, the World Bank, New York University, Harvard, Oxford and others. Many courses are available on-demand, while other courses feature real-time teaching by some of the world's foremost experts.
A combination of live broadcasts and online sessions alongside the first all-digital UN General Assembly, the SDG Action Zone convened leading thinkers, actors, creators, and activists through frank debate, challenging discussions, inspiring showcases and interactive exhibitions.
Dozens of presentations are available in the SDG Action Zone's virtual library, organized by people, planet and partnerships. Check out the celebrity conversations and musical performances any time!
Events
International Week
International Week is the largest annual extracurricular educational event on campus and fosters global citizenship through engagement with today's most pressing issues.
Established in 1986, International Week (or I-Week) is one of the University of Alberta’s signature events, featuring free events designed to instigate new thoughts, inspire discussions and animate debates on current global issues. I-Week's award-winning program provides a forum for all segments of the U of A community—students, staff and faculty—as well as government departments, non-governmental organizations and civil society to present their own particular views on global issues and share their solutions to create a better world.
Sustainability Awareness Week
Sustainability Awareness Week has been one of the University of Alberta's largest event series since it launched in 2008. The whole campus community gets involved in highlighting campus sustainability initiatives, social and environmental issues, and building connections beyond campus. Events include very popular walking tours, hands-on workshops, speaker panels, film screenings and explorations of local food.
Running annually in late October, each day focuses on a different theme inspired by the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
