This year, the University of Alberta is celebrating the achievements of our graduates with our first-ever virtual convocation on June 12. As we prepare to commemorate the achievements of our graduating class, we’re sharing just a few of the amazing stories of our graduates.
Meet Cara Fan, graduating from the BSc Specialization program in the Department of Chemistry and the Science Internship Program, as she reflects on the unique opportunities at UAlberta and the things that have made campus feel like a second home.
What led you to pick the University of Alberta for your studies?
I picked UAlberta because of the diverse research and the student-focused school programs here.
Tell us about your experience in the Faculty of Science.
My experience in the Faculty of Science has been challenging and rewarding. There are moments when the study curves are very steep, but I have received lots of guidance from the instructors, teaching assistants, and friends. Outside of the classes, the Faculty of Science has provided many opportunities for students to get involved in undergraduate research, student governance, and creative student projects. I have really enjoyed these unique experiences.
What is one of your favourite memories from your time at UAlberta?
One of my favourite memories of UAlberta is celebrating Christmas with friends at the school residence, which made me feel like I have a second home here.
What advice do you have for current and future students at the Faculty of Science?
My advice to the current and future students at the Faculty of Science is to break the glass ceiling and to embrace all of your potential. This is something I am still working on too. As an international student, I set up limitations for myself even without realizing it, so I think it is vital for us to recognize that with our hard work and others' help, we will be able to achieve things above and beyond.
How have you spent your time during COVID-19 distancing?
Besides studying from home, I have been trying to plant vegetables, cook a lot, and paint more.
How do you plan on celebrating convocation?
I plan to celebrate virtually with family and friends! Maybe cook together over video chat and play games after the food.
What's next after graduation?
My general plan is to work for a while and return for graduate study. During this unprecedented time, I am also planning to participate more in community services.
