International Day of Persons with Disabilities
2 December 2024
Dear students and colleagues,
Today, we reach out to you in recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), established by the United Nations (UN) in 1992. Each year on December 3rd, we celebrate the achievements and contributions of people living with disabilities while emphasizing the importance of understanding, education, and action. The theme for this year, "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future," emphasizes the vital role of people with disabilities in making the world more inclusive and sustainable. It also focuses on the importance of including them in decisions that impact their lives.
As we observe this day, let us reflect on the progress we have made together and the work still ahead. Our shared hope is a powerful force that drives our collective determination to create meaningful change and dismantle oppressive systems in our society. Together, we can foster an inclusive world that honors the rights and dignity of all individuals.
We encourage everyone to learn more about IDPD, and explore how to promote inclusion and equality in our lives using the following resources:
- History of Disability Justice - Disability Justice Network of Ontario
- Disability Justice: Disability Justice Readings and Lessons - Miami University
- Monitoring the Rights of People with Disabilities - Canadian Human Rights Commission
This coming year, we are focused on creating spaces where everyone feels heard and valued, making our classrooms and workplaces truly welcoming for all. We would love for you to join the conversation, please share your thoughts and ideas on how we can improve and make a real difference together in the year ahead.
In solidarity,
Jennifer Passey (Chair of the Psychology EDI Committee)
