Planting the seed for the next generation of scientists

U School is a program run by the University of Alberta Senate that aims to introduce and connect students, who are in grades 4 through 9 from socially vulnerable, Aboriginal (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) and rural communities, to the University of Alberta.
Members of the Immunology and Infection Students' Association (IMINSA) took up the challenge to inspire Grade 9 students to consider science, particularly immunology and infection, as a future path.
IMINSA began by introducing some basic scientific concepts.
Later, the students excitedly strolled down to the Houghton lab and Meier-Stephenson lab where they loaded coloured samples into gels and got a first-hand look at some cancer cells through a microscope.
