LKSIoV welcomes Dr. Wendy Magee as Director of Operations and Research
7 September 2022
The Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology (LKSIoV) welcomes Dr. Wendy Magee as the Director of Operations and Research as of August 30, 2022.
Dr. Magee will oversee LKSIoV's multi-million dollar operation which focuses on supporting virology and immunology research to discover new methods to prevent, diagnose, and treat viral diseases and emerging pathogens.
"I am looking forward to working with the Institute’s researchers, collaborators and partners and supporting them through the Institute’s initiatives."
Dr. Magee’s ties to the University of Alberta are long-lived, beginning in 1991 when she began a bachelor of science in microbiology. She continued with her education, obtaining a master’s degree in microbiology and biotechnology. For her doctorate in virology, she studied the mechanism of action of antiviral agents, specifically the mechanism of action of the nucleoside phosphonates cidofovir and (S)-9-(3-hydroxy-2-phosphonomethoxypropyl)adenine against viral polymerases.
Dr. Magee also holds a master of science degree in forensic science from the George Washington University and worked as a forensic DNA analyst for four years at Cellmark, a private DNA testing lab in Maryland.
Since completing her PhD in 2009, Dr. Magee has held several administrative roles in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, including grant writer and the operations manager for the Li Ka Shing Applied Virology Institute. Most recently, she was the Director of Core Research Facilities, responsible for the administrative oversight of the seven core facilities in the Faculty.
Dr. Magee will oversee the administration of the Institute, as well as work closely with Dr. Lorne Tyrrell and the Management and Oversight committees to set LKSIoV's strategic direction of reducing the burden of viral disease on human health.
We're excited to have Dr. Magee on our team. Please join us in giving her a warm welcome to LKSIoV!
