Project title: Investigating the role of biofilm formation in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease-associated bacteria

How would you describe your research project to someone without a scientific background?

Crohn’s disease (CD) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that affects millions of people across the globe. While the underlying causes of Crohn’s disease are multifaceted, studies show that gut bacteria, specifically adherent-invasive E. coli (AIEC), play an important role in origin and development of disease. However, the mechanisms underlying the destructiveness of these bacteria remain undetermined. Our recent findings revealed a role for type IV secretion system (T4SS) in the development of AIEC. T4SS is a nano-machinery that spans the bacterial cell wall and performs several functions. AIEC strains use their T4SS to form biofilms, or protective coverings, shielding the bacteria from the immune system. Our project is designed to uncover the mechanisms that promote biofilm formation by harmful bacteria in the CD environment. For more information, please visit: www.elhenawylab.com/

What impact do you hope this project makes once completed?

We hope our project is able to contribute to a better and more refined understanding of Crohn’s disease development. A better understanding of the disease will allow for better therapeutics, improving the quality of life for millions of people suffering from this chronic condition.

How has the support from Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology helped you?

The Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology has tremendously helped me grow as a researcher. Their continued support of the research community and promotion of events such as ImmuNet seminars has allowed me to expand my knowledge, network with leading professionals, and access to exceptional professors and researchers.

When did you realize you wanted to pursue a degree / career in science?

I realized I wanted to pursue a career in science in my grade 10 biology class. I loved reading about experiments and the progressions in research from one scientist to another. The more I learned about different scientists and their findings, the more I admired their devotion to the scientific process and their gumption to constantly push the boundary of the unknown.

What three words describe your research experience?

Challenging. Fostering. Rewarding.

What is your favorite distraction or hobby?

My favorite distraction or hobby is hiking. I absolutely love getting out in nature and exploring new trails.

What is one thing you cannot live without?

Currently, the one thing I always keep on me is my Kindle.
