Project title: Malignant B cells (B-CLL) induce tumor-specific T-cell exhaustion and CLL progression by secreting IL-16
How would you describe your research project to someone without a scientific background?
The global burden of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), the most common type of leukemia, has increased over the years. Recent studies have described an important role for CD8 T cells in the development and progression of the disease. CD8 T cells have the ability to target and kill tumor cells. However, if the source of the disease is not initially cleared, as what occurs in cancers, the killing functions of CD8 T cells are progressively reduced. This is commonly referred to as T-cell exhaustion. I will be exploring receptors and cytokines (messenger proteins) which induce T-cell exhaustion, notably IL16.
What impact do you hope this project makes once completed?
I believe my research project can help determine whether targeting IL-16 would have clinical implications for blood and bone marrow cancers.

When did you realize you wanted to pursue a degree / career in science?
Ever since I was a child I enjoyed solving puzzles. I knew from a small age that science, with all its puzzles and unanswered questions, would be the path I would like to pursue.
What's one piece of advice you received from your supervisor/mentor that has resonated with you?
During my short time at the Elahi Lab, I have been able to meet many influential peers. One of the best pieces of advice I received is that to succeed in research, you need to be patient. So I have been trying to be more patient and enjoy the process of learning.
What is your favorite distraction or hobby?
I love nature and winter recreation. I really enjoy walking/cycling on Edmonton’s beautiful trails and enjoying the view of the river valley.
What is one thing you cannot live without?
It would definitely be hard to live without my phone. At the end of day, I just can't wait to come home and talk to my parents from back home.
