Ashley Halko-Addley, MA student in Media and Cultural Studies, spent her summer of 2018 conducting fieldwork for her Master's project on the Canadian prairies. She is studying the Ukrainian wax ceremony, a healing ceremony brought over to Canada with the early Ukrainian pioneer settlers. The last comprehensive study on the wax ceremony was completed by Rena Hanchuk, alumna of the Ukrainian Folklore Program at the University of Alberta, in the late 1980s. Ashley will tell us about her fieldwork experience and how the wax ceremony evolved during three decades of undocumented change.
