Hear how U of A donors have successfully integrated philanthropy into their estate plans to help future students and our community thrive while ensuring their loved ones are cared for. Gain valuable insights and perspectives from a diverse panel of speakers, including a wills and estates lawyer and a current student.

Melissa Padfield, ‘03 BA, Deputy Provost (Students and Enrolment), University of Alberta
Melissa has 20 years of experience working in higher education and currently serves as Deputy Provost (Students and Enrolment) at the University of Alberta overseeing all university wide services related to the student experience. She has led a number of institution- wide initiatives including spearheading Igniting Purpose: The Student Experience Action Plan. Melissa is a proud U of A alumna, with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a certificate in Globalization and Governance, and has a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Victoria.

Dr. Marvin Washington, College Dean and Vice-Provost of the University of Alberta’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities
In Dr. Marvin Washington’s role as the College Dean and Vice-Provost of the University of Alberta’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities, he brings together the combined strength of the faculties of arts, business, education, and law. Dr. Washington is a highly regarded educator, having taught undergraduates, graduates, and executives during his 15-year tenure at the U of A. He was the recipient of the University of Alberta’s Last Lecture Series in 2017, which recognizes the professor that students and alumni feel was the most impactful during their time at the U of A.

Doris Bonora, ‘86 LLB, KC, TEP, Partner, Trusts and Estates, with KPMG Law LLP
Doris Bonora, KC, TEP is an experienced lawyer with a focus on estate planning and administration, personal and business succession planning, philanthropy, litigation, and trusts. Her extensive practice has seen her represent a broad spectrum of clients, from individuals to multimillion-dollar trusts, First Nation trusts, and Metis Settlements. Doris is heavily involved in pro bono work, and has been recognized with awards that highlight her dedication to the highest quality of service for her clients - from her “Wealth Management Lawyer of the Year for the Americas” award, to her recognition in “WHO’s Who lawyers of Canada” and rankings in Canadian Legal Lexpert and Chambers.
Dr. Vicki Strang, ‘95 PhD, Professor Emerita, University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing
Dr. Vicki Strang is an alumna of the University of Alberta (‘95 PhD), University of Manitoba and Dalhousie University. She has a special interest in international health and was heavily involved in the CIDA funded partnership project between the Faculties of Nursing from the U of A and the University of Ghana at the turn of the century. Vicki continues her international focus, particularly on Sub-Saharan Africa, through her involvement with the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. In addition to being a professor emerita, Vicki is a proud U of A supporter and advocate of education.
