Dr. Sharaf, a full time faculty lecturer (career status), joined the Department of Economics at the University of Alberta in July 2014. He served as an Assistant Professor for two years in the Department of Economics at Concordia University in Montreal, after obtaining his Ph.D. from the same University in 2012.
His research interest lies in applied Econometrics, spanning topics in Health Economics and Economic Development. Dr. Sharaf has several published articles in top refereed international journals on topics related to health risk behaviors, socioeconomic inequalities and human development. His research work has been presented in several domestic and international conferences, and some of his research findings have attracted wide international media coverage such as: Reuters; Independent (U.K.); New York Daily News; Los Angeles Times; Daily Mail; Fox News; News Guardian (U.K.); Cosmopolitan; CTV news; Toronto Telegraph; and the Edmonton Journal.
Since Fall 2015, Dr. Sharaf has been serving on the Department of Economics Teaching Committee, and the Undergraduate Recruiting and Advising Committee. He is currently the Director of the Tutor Center in the Department of Economics, as well as the coordinator of the undergraduate exams proctoring.
Dr. Sharaf teaches a variety of Economics courses at the introductory and intermediate level such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Econometrics. He has been described by his students as being an amazing professor who genuinely cares about his students. His lectures are described as interesting, engaging and the love of learning he shares is contagious.
Dr. Sharaf and other award recipients will be honored at The Faculty of Arts Celebration of Excellence later this spring.
