On 6 June 2023 Russia destroyed the Kakhovka Reservoir on the Dnipro River in Ukraine, causing an environmental disaster and a humanitarian crisis. With support from CIUS a comprehensive study of the environmental impact has been undertaken.

Promotes research, study, and awareness of the Great Famine of 1932–34 in Soviet Ukraine as part of the genocide against Ukrainians throughout the Soviet Union. HREC was established in 2013 with funding from the Temerty Foundation.
