About the Show

Proofread, a borrowed term used to describe the process of checking for errors in text prior to printing, is an interactive work comprising print and video, incubated during a nine month visiting artist position in the printmaking department at the University of Alberta.

Citing the traditions and social history of the letterpress, the gallery will transform into an expanded sculptural space whereby audiences can participate in an enlarged word game using a uniquely printed typeface made from clothing donated to the artist from students and friends.

Experienced alongside a video work that reveals the performative print-production through an innovative process, audiences will be invited to arrange the printed one-of-a-kind-font to spell out words and statements using custom made displays on gallery walls. Like a type of ongoing fridge poetry, words will be edited, added to and rearranged, to create an immersive and experiential word play. In a constant state of flux, this evolving printed community message board will be a silent broadcaster of statements and ideas that connect communities and prompt debate around print traditions.

About the Artist

Yvonne Mullock is an artist currently based in Moh’kinsstis/Calgary, Alberta, Treaty 7 Territory and the Métis Nation Region III. Over two decades she has participated in artist-in-residence programmes within Scotland, England, Canada, and the United States and shown in group and solo exhibitions in Oregon, Calgary, Toronto, Fogo Island, Kentucky and Glasgow. Mullock has been awarded grants from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Canada Council for the Arts, Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers and in 2017 was the recipient of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts ‘International Studio Curatorial Program’ residency in New York, USA. Mullock’s work is featured in both private and the public collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Canada. Selected projects include: Harmonia at the Esplanade, Medicine Hat, Alberta; Gift-Love, Manning Hall Commission at Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada; ExtraOrdinary Objects at the Glenbow Museum; Dark Horse at Stride Gallery, Calgary; HIT & MISS at Esker Foundation Contemporary Art Gallery, Calgary; HOME ECONOMICS Textile Museum of Canada, Toronto and from 2011-15 was Lead Artist for a community based quilt project, Fogo Island Arts, Newfoundland, Canada. Mullock is represented by Norberg Hall Gallery, Calgary, Alberta.
