The University of Alberta landed firmly in the top 100 in four areas of Times Higher Education's newly expanded World University Rankings 2018 by subject.
Education led the way, nailing down 60th spot. The U of A also placed 77th in the category of clinical, pre-clinical and health; 83rd in law; and 99th in psychology.
Jennifer Tupper, dean of the Faculty of Education, said her faculty has long endeavoured to create learning experiences in graduate and undergraduate programs that allow graduating educators to make real differences in the world.
Similarly, our impactful research influences policy, practice and knowledge at local, national and international levels," she said. "The Times Higher Education rankings affirm the reputation we've cultivated in these areas is recognized and valued around the world."
This year's subject-area rankings were expanded to include more subjects, and more institutions in each ranking. Overall, the rankings looked at 11 overarching subject areas and assessed five criteria: teaching (27.5 per cent), research (27.5 per cent), citations (35 per cent), international outlook (7.5 per cent) and industry income (2.5 per cent).
In the case of education, its 60th-place showing came courtesy of top 50 showings in teaching (45), research (47), international outlook (44) and industry income (26), along with finishing 62nd in the highly weighted citations category.
The Times Higher Education subject rankings comes after a top five showing in the Maclean's University Rankings-the U of A's 12th such showing in a row-as well as a strong performance in the 2018 QS Graduate Employability Ranking, where the employment rate of U of A graduates ranked first in Canada and 52nd in the world.
Earlier in the year, the university jumped four spots, to 90th, in the 2018 QS World University Rankings.
Other recent rankings of note include one released by the Center for World University Rankings, which listed the U of A among the world's best in five subject areas, including sixth in transplantation; fifth in each of forestry, geology and petroleum engineering; and third in paleontology.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 placed the U of A in the top 100 in an unprecedented 25 subjects, including 10th in the world for sports-related subjects, 16th for nursing and 18th in mining engineering.
Times Higher Education also has the U of A ranked as the world's 31st most international university, ahead of the University of Toronto (32), Harvard (33), Stanford (36) and Princeton (37).
